What if we could detach repair not only from restoration but also from the very idea of the original—not so that repair comes first but that it comes before. Then, making and repair are inseparable, devoted to one another, suspended between and beside themselves.

- Fred Moten, “Nobody, Everybody”, Black and Blur (Durham: Duke University Press, 2017)

Join us for an afternoon of collective garment mending and reflective readings on the labour and material effects of practices of repair. Bring any garments that need mending and sit alongside others to patch them, darn them or stitch them back as we share poems and songs.

Artist Biography

Process-led, Daniella Valz Gen’s work deploys an oracular approach that engages with the realm of the symbolic through a tactile sensitivity, disrupting and queering forms of meaning making to challenge linear narratives. Born in Peru and based in London, Valz Gen’s work explores poetic experience in the interstices between languages, cultures and value systems as areas where potential new meanings can arise.
