Lynette Wallworth - Elegy for Young Lovers

Lynette Wallworth’s interactive video installations form part of English National Opera and Young Vic’s joint production of Elegy for Young Lovers, directed by acclaimed actress and director Fiona Shaw.

Wallworth’s work is fundamentally responsive with a strong focus on interactivity of the viewer with the work. She presents a series of video interventions responding (some in real time) to the action of the performers, others as visual narrative for the work and another inviting the audience to engage directly the video. Wallworth is working alongside video engineer Matt Jakob to collaborate in the creation of these exciting new works.

Elegy for Young Lovers, a rarely staged masterpiece with music by Hans Werner Henze and libretto by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman, centres on poet Gregor Mittenhofer who travels to an inn in the Austrian Alps in the hope of gaining artistic inspiration. Consumed by his desire for recognition he begins to exploit and destroy the lives of those around him to satisfy his creativity and ego.
