Ryoji Ikeda - dataphonics [radio program]

dataphonics [radio program series] consists of ten six–minute segments, broadcast monthly on Radio France during 2006/07. Ikeda’s approach combines microscopic engineering methods with a minimal aesthetic. The series is both an homage to French composer Pierre Schaeffer’s recording Solfège de l'Objet Sonore and a conceptual project that responds to the ever–present binary numerical system of today’s digital age, ultimately seeking to materialise the invisible domain of ‘totally-pure-digital-data’. A long composition bringing together the ten segments will be broadcast as a final mix.

dataphonics is a music project that focuses on the relationship between the data of sound and the sound of data. It crosses various formats: multi–channel concert, radio programmes and audio/data research etc. dataphonics is part of Ikeda's datamatics project and was developed from its first prototype in July 2006 – a multi-channel concert for a blacked–out space – through a series of residencies and commissions.
