Martin Firrell is an artist who places text in public spaces because he believes art’s place is at the centre of everyday life.
I Want to Live in a City Where is a new commission for the Trafalgar Square Festival 2006 funded by the Mayor of London. The festival is three weeks of free spectacular outdoor performance every Thursday to Sunday from 3 - 20 Aug 06.
For this new commission, Firrell projects text describing the city he’d like to live in - a wish list ranging from the practical to the profound to the absurd - onto the façade of the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, London. Strikingly visual, Firrell’s text works are both highly evocative and directly engaging.
Firrell has created public realm projects for Tate Britain and central London locations including Donmar Theatre, Soho Hotel and railway stations, using placards, billboards and projection to carry his text interventions.
